7/24/09 Synchronicity Winter Guard

Synchronicity Winter Guard was started by director Kristy Humbard for one reason: Sky Ryders. Kristy explains how Synchronicity came to be. “As a Sky Ryders age-out, I knew they were folding in the late August of 2008. I was heart broken that the guard I loved so much wasn’t going to be performing, but not as much as the members that still had years left to spin in Independent A. They were my family and they needed a home for spinning, so I decided that I would help them find a new home.” And a new home she found. Under the guidance of Ann Duncan and Connie Mogg, Kristy put together Synchronicity. “We found 5 members that were dedicated and willing to work through the first year hassles. I called an old friend and Sky Ryder family member Jennifer “Cardiff” Niemann to help me choreograph our show. I knew it wouldn’t be Independent A caliber if I didn’t have another person who has written IA material.”

They didn’t know what kind of reception they would have by the crowds, judges, or circuit. But they still went out and performed with pride. And it paid off. People were taking notice how good they were, even with just 5 members. “I remember the judges’ tapes and numerous people that found me after the shows. They loved how our members moved. They always said it looked like we had at least 10-15 people out there,” Kristy said. They finished their ‘miracle’ season with a 5th place finish at MCCGA Championships. Kristy was so proud of her guard and couldn’t believe how far they had come. She knew then that this was just the beginning. A new family had been formed.

With new things, come new challenges. Synchronicity set their sights on becoming a take-notice guard in Independent A. They wanted to come out stronger and more impressive than they did last season. They want to show everyone that they belong in the IA division and that they are here to stay. This season was Synchronicity’s second season in MCCGA, but it was their first in WGI. Age-out Crystal Hedges was very excited about this opportunity. “The first year out we just wanted to focus on getting out there and make a name for ourselves in MCCGA. Now we think we are ready to make a splash in the WGI Circuit.”

And a splash they made this season. They finished in 3rd place at their first-ever WGI Regional in St. Louis, MO. They also finished in 3rd place at MCCGA Championships. However, the biggest splash they believe they made was becoming a semi-finalist guard at WGI Finals in Dayton, OH. Synchronicity Winter Guard was the only MCCGA Independent A competing unit to advance into semi-finals.

Synchronicity doubled their members from 2008 with 11 performing members in 2009, and they performed a compilation of Phillip Glass compositions in their show titled, “Complex Simplicity.” The show explored a complex progression of mood from sad and unsure to angry and aggressive. The complexity of the visual design and choreography paired with the simplicity of the musical parts and color palette gave the show its name. Staff members for Synchronicity this season were Kristy Humbard, Jennifer Niemann, and Sara Corrigan with choreographer Tim LeBlanc.

With their second season under their belts, Synchronicity is ready to come out strong in 2010. “We got the first year gitters out for MCCGA and WGI. Now it’s time to focus and keep striving for our goal to be a take notice guard in Independent A.”

I am way proud of Kristy and everyone else who stuck with it and continued on in MCCGA. I loved seeing you guys in 08 at champs and again at WGI in 09 to cheer me on! Its different when you know you have family there to support you, especially when you dont expect it and they start yelling crazy things like "GO SANJAYA" cause some crazy lady did it 2 years earlier. Because of the people who are there and built that program, I know I can consider Sync as a extended Sky family. Hopefully next year I get to see you again at WGI, but live this time. Miss you guys!
